[single] JASMINE - sad to say

wow, her debut single is doing surprisingly well. broke oricon's top 10 today! and 'sad to say' is a lot easier to listen to when you don't have her walking around with her crazy outfit. other three tracks on the single are great too! check them out~

overall very strong debut single. as mentioned before, 'sad to say' is great to listen to without the distraction of the PV. XD already kinda went over the song in my last entry so moving on to the other tracks. the two 'i'm in luv wit u' remixes are great in their own way, one being a little retro in terms of production and the other being well, chill. makes me want to listen to how the original would have sounded though. I'm curious! anyways, she loses the kinda whiny voice in these two tracks (cept maybe in one part), but I'm enjoying them. the third track, 'Koi', pulled me in right off with the funky bass and the chorus just flows so well. might be the best track off the single and its quickly becoming my favorite.

recently, there have been a lot of young R&B/pop female acts being more prominent in the Japan music scene to follow Miliyah or Thelma. for example May J. and BENI have been getting popular after their label change (and for BENI, the name change) and Kana Nishino came out of nowhere for me since I don't really follow the cellphone downloads. anyways, JASMINE seems to have the edge to set her apart from the rest of the pack. might be because she leans more on the R&B side. hmm well I'm gonna keep up with her future releases. wish I was back in Japan so that I could see what kind of promotion they did for her.

kinda off topic, but RIP Michael Jackson. remember seeing him on the MTV Music Video Awards Japan one year and how the crowd went crazy for him. there is no doubt in my mind that his influence reached there as well.

holy crap its been awhile. last music download entry was like what, August 08?! back then I introduced JAY'ED who now has a hit duet with singer JUJU. now lets see if this newcomer will reach success too.

a new R&B face is coming around and so far all she's got going for her is this promotional video for her debut single, which comes out on the 24th of this month. she's got a gospel choir background and right now is 19 years old. and dang, her stylist or her own sense of style may be a bit out there, but the song is catchy, especially the chorus. she reminds me of Miliyah Kato with the lyrics and age wise. by the way she's not afraid to swear in English or Japanese haha. on her voice, its not spectacular or horrible, though it is a little whiny at times.

video wise, its pretty boring with just her in the backdrop of some empty Japanese city landscapes. sometimes shes chilling on some steps or walking in some intersection...yea, thats about it. her outfit is the only thing that catches your attention in the video XD

so anyways, 'sad to say' has been stuck in my head for the past couple of days now :) she's definitely caught my interest and I'm interested to hear the other songs on her debut single. what are your thoughts?

....crap. exactly one month from now I'll be back in the US of A (give or take the time difference). as expected, not ready to go back and already planning my options on coming back to teach English since when I graduate in the winter, there will be like no jobs available cause the economy sucks now. already lost my yearly summer internship cause of the recession so there really is no reason for me to go back... :(

that, and its so much easier to stalk Amuro-chan here. as well as other artists :P info for summer and fall concerts are coming out and makes me really depressed that I won't get to see BONNIE PINK live :( :(

ok, could whine some more but for you LJ people that used to come by here for some Jpop mp3s and info, this means that I'll start this up again. if any of you are still around after my like one year hiatus lol.

Amuro Namie in Concert!!!

Ok, so I know I haven't been updating or whatever for the past several months...I dunno, kinda a mix of not having time and having bad uploading speeds that I don't have anything to post. :/

but ANYWAYS, I saw my idol/obsession tonight: AMURO NAMIE. holy crap I can die happy now ^__^

so like omg I finally get to see Amuro-chan live. I don't care if I dropped hundreds on the tickets and concert goods, it was amazing enough that I'm seriously considering going again in a different city XD

so before the concert, my friends and I made sure we got there early, like two hours early and there were already a lot of people there waiting to get in! they had a tent up that was selling the goods, like a circus tent to go along with the 'Best Fiction' theme. my friends were lame and didn't buy any concert goods, but I already looked online at what they were selling and already had a good idea of what I was gonna get and how much I was gonna spend. ^^; actually turned out to be more than expected cause I needed to buy the eco-bag cause there was no way I could carry all the Amuro goods ^^; whoops. oh well, money well spent I guess. I just dunno if I have it in me to open up the t-shirts and wear them... come to think of it, all the other shirts I got at other concerts are still unopened o_o

so anyways, with my bagful of goodies, we waited around until we could get in. right around the tent they had cutouts of Amuro-chan and you know the ones where you can put your own face in there? yea, they had three of those XD very embarrassing cause I felt that it was almost a crime to pretend I was Amuro lol. one was from her older VS Sassoon campaign, one from the Rock Steady PV, and one from the New Look PV. very funny when guys try to put their face in place of hers lol.

k, now getting in they had a booth where you could pre-order her upcoming hawt single "WILD/Dr", and if you did you got a poster. so of course I did XD I'm hoping that the poster will be of the same photo shoot as the covers to that single cause that'll be sweeeeeet. just gotta wait and see until I pick it up on 3/18. can't wait to see the PVs to that single ^__^

ok, finally we go in to our seats. fan club seats are all in the arena, but randomly given. unfortunately the tickets I got from the fan club seller was kinda more towards the back... :( still better I guess than being on the second floor in the waaaaay back, but it didn't help that tall people were in front of us. :/ people around us had binoculars, they were the smart ones!! concert started a little late, but omg omg omg I couldn't believe that I was gonna see her live!!

she started off with "Do Me More" with an intro video to go along with that PV, starring the little girl and fairy tale theme. so like, through the entire concert I was in a state of bliss and disbelief, so my emotions don't really change ^^; there was a time where it looked like she was sick or something on stage, cause she stopped singing for a big and turned away, but didn't show anything else after that. hope it went alright.

in total, she sang 26 songs by my recollection XD kinda sorta remember the order, but the of course sang all the songs off of "BEST FICTION", as well as older songs like "Say the Word" and her collaboration songs "Black Diamond" with DOUBLE and "Luvotomy" with m-flo. ^_^ outside of that, she sang "Top Secret", "It's all about you", "Violet Sauce", "No", "White Light", "Hide and Seek" and "Hello".

when the song "New Look" came on, she changed into a cute outfit and appeared on a huge high heel shoe with 3 of her girl dancers. thought that was cute hehe. liked the bar dance with "Sexy Girl" and how she kept the cool formation changes to "No". and omg she was so cute when she sang "White Light"! my friend said that she looked like a doll XD haha. and she looked really cool with her hood up during one song...can't remember what it was :( she can just effortlessly go from cute to cool.

the final three songs for the encore were "WoWa", "CAN'T SLEEP, CAN'T EAT, I'M SICK", and "Baby Don't Cry". during "WoWa" she introduced the dancers and to end off everything with "Baby Don't Cry" was great. I think when she smiles when she sings she comes off as way too cute, makes me jealous lolol. I think everybody was singing along to that one XD it was amazing though, she didn't do an MC break at all during the show! only her clothing changes were her breaks. sheesh, continually singing and dancing...wow, just one reason I admire her so much. anyways, she only said a few things at the end of the show.

can't believe that its over!! nooooo, time passed by waaay too fast :( my throat was dry after singing along and yelling for so long, not to mention my legs after standing and straining to be on my toes to get a view of the stage! ho boy. Amuro-chan is just too hot, being 31 and singing well while dancing in stilettos... ::sigh::

so I have a quiz tomorrow and another concert to go to (this time its Aoyama Thelma) so I really should get to bed or studying. oh well, I'm still on a high from Amuro's concert so whatever :D

here's hoping that I'll update this more...only three months left in Japan...NOOOOooooooo.... but still have like 10 concerts left.

AI in concert!

just went to my first concert here in Japan so yay. well, actually more like a mini concert, but AI was guest performing at some basketball event so of course I gotta go and see it XD

more details later (I got a speech I haven't prepared for yet...), but this is just the start of my concert goings in Japan ^__^ hoping to try out the uploading again now that I adjusted to life here...for the most part.

next up is an introduction to a upcoming solo J-urban singer. after being featured with a few other rather unknown artists, JAY'ED is starting to take the solo act seriously after releasing his first single "Superwoman".

so actually I don't have that much info about him, cause he is that new/unknown. he's half Japanese thanks to his dad and his mother is from New Zealand. went indies for a little while, released an album called "The Gift" (gonna try to find that when I go to Japan).

I heard the few songs that he's been featured in with "E"qual and NORISIAM-X. being that I do listen to the kinda out there female rapper NORISIAM-X, I provided the two songs that I know he's been featured in. the first was off her first album and its a nice chill song. JAY'ED's vocals smooth out the rapping that NORISIAM-X rolls out. "Pop Them Bottles" was off her second album....and this time he's part of a loud and somewhat obnoxious chorus/hook. he actually made a solo version of it on his indies album. got some interesting lyrics too...lol. just a party song. got an interesting beat and production that's the character of NORISIAM-X's second album.

I didn't really remember who he was whenever he was featured. however he sure stands out in his solo release. its chill, smooth, and just has that nice touch of piano in the background. wish more male R&B artists would sing stuff like this. only slight thing I found bad in the song was the ending when a reggae beat comes in. :/ oh well. I still find myself listening to it again and again.

being that its his first PV, the video is kinda low budget. still a little interesting up until the middle as they try to 'hide' him. its kinda like, who is this newcomer? nice concept.

saw and heard his upcoming 2nd single. I'm a little disappointed being that "Superwoman" is like, one of the best R&B songs from a male singer that I heard in a looooong while. its called "Zutto Issho" and it sounds like a summer song. nothing too special, but maybe it'll grow on me.

OK, time to get this music blog rolling. see previous entry to see what I'm talking about. downloading rules still apply! basically comment if you download, otherwise I'll remove them.

so the first thing that really made me happy in Taiwan was how cheap the music CDs were. yea, they were the overseas version of the Japanese CDs, but they were legit. each one was like $11-$15 USD! thats like cheaper than any online store I've shopped at. so yea, spent like around $140 for like 10+ CDs. ^__^ suh-weet. definitely gonna go back, if only for the CD shopping haha. also got some promo tour goods as well, that'll be for a different entry XD

and man, in Taipei shampoo advertisements featuring Amuro Namie were everywhere. on buses, on fliers, in subways, in clubs, etc. her 'Rock Steady' song from her '60s70s80s' single was used for a TV commercial which I saw a lot XD here's a picture I took of the huge advertisement in the subway station.

was sad to see that go at the end of July. :(

so yea, at the one club I went to they featured the TV advertisement by playing it on the background of the stage and by giving away free samples of the shampoo and conditioner. I was stoked at how large the ad campaign was O_O if I have time later, I'll put up a pic of the flier I got at the club that featured Amuro. XD

and now time for the review for Amuro's best album, 'BEST FICTION'. preeetty sweet. got all the great singles on there and having the DVD with all the PVs is great as well. not to mention it only cost me like 12 bucks and came with a free poster XD this is one of those albums where I can just listen to over and over again, and the two new songs are just an added bonus. overall, 'Do Me More' is ok, but its been stuck in my head the past several days. just expected a little more from a Nao'ymt production. 'Sexy Girl' is alright as well, not sure I'm into the chorus is all.

only gripe I really have about this album is once again there is no 'The Speed Star'. grr...they skipped out on it on her 'Queen of Hip-Ppop' album and it was released on a double A side single so what's the big deal? PV was pretty slick too. :( they should have kicked out 'All For You' (since well, its a bore). just doesn't fit well with all the R&B influenced songs. so yea, add that song and the song list is set. well, actually add 'Hide and Seek' too, even though it wasn't a single and then it'll be even better lol.

one final comment on the album...I really don't like how airbrushed the images of Amuro looks. yea, I know it was intentional, but seriously, her hair doesn't look real at all. booo.

ok, so this was friends only, until I realized that like only 2-3 of my friends actually downloaded from me in the first place. lol

so anyways, truth be told, these past two months of not updating has been great. don't have to worry about what songs to put up and save the extra hour or two for something else now that free time is in short supply cause of the full time internship. plus, I got into a bad habit of uploading mainly new songs just cause it was convenient.

I still want to keep the journal rather open while still featuring my J-music obsession. so I think I'll actually make this a blog blog. I have a tendency when listening or watching a new song or video to make snide comments (like, ew, why oh why did you grow facial hair?). and so in lieu of the 10 songs every other week, I'll just up a song or two when I get an itch to show the world how great (or cheesy or whatever) the song is.

still wanna go with the travel journal idea, though not sure how well it'll mesh with the music entries. do you people actually care about my travels? hmhmmm.... speaking of traveling, I leave the country for the first time on Sunday, bound for Taiwan. for 5 weeks. and right now I'm not too excited about it. >_> I have money to make, books to read, badminton and video games to play, people to see and drawings to draw. ugh. I'm sure once I'm there I'll be cool with it, but right now I just see summer plans going out the window.

so yea, dunno if I'm bringing my laptop with me to Taiwan, but definitely the music entries should be back up in August, just with a different and more random format.

ok, so yea, I've skipped out on updating for about a month now. dunno about updating in the near future as right now is my finals time. like I said before (for those that read it) I'll be going to Japan for a year starting in September and dunno what the future of this journal is. not only that but I'll also be gone for a month this summer going to Taiwan so yea...

I have noticed that comments have been declining (though that's in line with the number of downloads) so yea, I dunno if I should just stop now and not worry about this LJ ever again or whatever. might convert this journal to a travel blog while abroad, but really dunno.

so yea, main point is this: I haven't been updating and dunno if I should continue.

btw, ALL MUSIC SAMPLES HAVE BEEN DELETED FROM PAST ENTRIES!

Utada Hikaru - Prisoner of Love
INFO: known as Hikki to her fans, Utada Hikaru was born in New York and even attended Columbia University before getting married (yet as of early 2007 she has been divorced). she adds a lot of R&B into her music and released a CD in the US before becoming immensely popular in Japan, going under the name of Cubic U. she also released another US CD under the name Utada in 2004.
THOUGHTS: hehee ordered my copy already~~ and all you people should too! only a few new songs, but that doesn't matter since her single songs are all great. like this new track, a little dramatic pop from Hikki.

Aoyama Thelma - RHYTHM
INFO: a new and young J-urban/Jpop artist. part Japanese and Trinidad, she started up her career being featured in other J-urban artist's tracks. her collaboration "Koko ni Iru yo" with the rapper, SoulJa, has become a hit on the charts and she has released a successful answer song to it called "Soba ni Iru ne". her debut single, "ONE WAY", dropped early September 2007.
THOUGHTS: debut album by her~ lets see if she can ride out her newfound popularity with it. don't like how it loses steam at the end with no solid R&B tracks, but here's one. now go support her XD

TERIYAKI BOYZ - ZOCK ON! feat Pharrell & Busta Rhymes
INFO: a hip-hop group formed from rappers from different labels and groups. the members are VERBAL from m-flo, Ilmari and RYO-Z from RIP SLYME, WISE from (B)APE Sounds, and NIGO as a producer and DJ who is from A BATHING APE. their first album "BEEF or CHICKEN" has contributions from various producers.
THOUGHTS: well they sure like working with American artists. thus, the lyrics are more...explicit. ha... overall pretty interesting collab with different sounds to make things interesting.

Hirai Ken - Twenty! Twenty! Twenty!
INFO: a popular solo R&B singer, he's known for his falsetto voice. he's also known for not looking Japanese, even though he is. he started releasing music in 1995 with the single, "Precious Junk". in 2005 he released “UTABAKA”, a best album to celebrate his 10th anniversary in the music industry.
THOUGHTS: dang, some artists are very active right now (H&MC & FLOW both also released new albums), but I think right now I'm liking Ken's the best right now. this song is more in the 'POP STAR' style and thus very poppy and cute. lol.

alice nine. - Eraser -Memoire d'une fleur-
INFO: a Jrock band with members Shou (vocals), Hiroto (guitar), Tora (guitar), Saga (bass), and Nao (drums). Nao formed the band in 2004 and they released their first maxi single in July that same year.
THOUGHTS: aw what an optimistic sounding song from them for their new single. the vocals are better suited for other types of rock, but it gives the track a unique sound.

Beni Arashiro - Southern Star
INFO: a solo artist who's part American, she started off in a contest called Kokuminteki Bishojo Contest and became a finalist without any formal training. she speaks English and Japanese fluently and does more of a R&B/pop style. she debuted with the single "Harmony" back in 2004 and released her first album, "Beni" in 2005.
THOUGHTS: so she released a best album and added a few new tracks as well. here's one of them; its a typical pop song with the Beni flair.

Tanaka Rouma - Forever Love feat Aoyama Thelma
INFO: a solo artist whose American name is Hector and who grew up in San Francisco, California. he's a dancer as well as a singer and was actually a semi-finalist on the show American Idol. he first made a show into Japan in Dohzi-T's song "better days" with Miliyah Kato. in June 2006 he made his solo debut with the single "One/No Change No End".
THOUGHTS: Thelma makes two appearances in this entry! haha. too bad she only has like...one solo line. >_> besides that, its an overall OK ballad.

Foxxi misQ - XBF
INFO: a new R&B group with three members: CHIE, YU-A, and DEM. although they each auditioned to be solo acts, they were grouped together to create a trio focusing on harmony. setting them apart from other groups/bands is that they don't have a lead singer and instead act as a 'unit'. they debuted with the single "Tha F.Q.'s Style" in July 2006.
THOUGHTS: at first listen its a standard new R&B song by the trio, but its been growing on me. kinda reminds me of their 'Luxury Ride' song. the song's title is this entry's password.

Kuraki Mai - Yume ga Saku Haru 夢が咲く春
INFO: known as Mai K to her fans, she's a Jpop singer who started her career in the USA with the single "Baby I Like". she's got a softer voice than most artists out there and started out focusing on a more R&B/pop style that got a lot of critics to compare her to Utada Hikaru. now she sticks with a light pop style.
THOUGHTS: daaang its been awhile since I upped any Mai K. her new single has a heavier beat than usual and there's a little bit of a disco vibe. overall pretty enjoyable.

Koda Kumi - Can't Lose
INFO: a solo Jpop/J-urban singer who originally tried out for Tsunku’s Morning Musume. after not making it she went solo and released her first single "Take Back" in 2000. however she didn't get very popular until she did a duet with BoA, a Kpop/Jpop singer, and sang the theme songs for Final Fantasy X-2. she also did a cover of the theme song for the movie Cutie Honey.
THOUGHTS: so last time was old school OLIVIA, now its old school Ku. XD off her first album, it's one of the songs that really got me into her way back when hahaha.

Namie Amuro - NEW LOOK
INFO: one of the biggest names in Jpop history, Namie started out in a group called THE SUPER MONKEYS but then left to do a solo career. however, she left the music scene for a while when she had her kid and her popularity kind of dropped. now she's still a famous singer but now focuses more on a R&B or J-urban style. she was also in the J-urban collaboration SUITE CHIC.
THOUGHTS: sweeeeet, new Namie~~~ this is for the 60s theme she did for her new single. its a little different but its cute. can you catch all the fashion references? lol

YUI - Namidairo
INFO: a young artist who made her debut with the single “feel my soul” in February 2005. she does a slower pop style, mostly influenced with acoustic guitars. before getting a record deal, she carried her guitar around and performed a lot locally. she released her debut album in February 2006.
THOUGHTS: a little bit more of a somber tone with this single. its great though as I don't think I really liked any of her past attempts at slower tracks.

INFO: a young singer and song writer from Osaka with a strong voice. she first started out inspired by gospel music and performing live with friends during her freshman year in high school. wanting to continue with music, she attended a private music school. she made her major debut with the single "I believe" in early 2006.
THOUGHTS: pretty pretty pretty song. especially the beginning vocals. not powerful in the terms of 'Mikazuki' or 'I believe' cause its softer in some aspects.

ZEEBRA - BUSHIDO
INFO: known as the father of Japanese Hip-hop for he was the one who first introduced rapping to Japan. he was part of the rap group King Giddra until making his solo debut in 1997. later in 1998 he released his first album called "The Rhyme Animal". with his influence and popularity as a rapper, ZEEBRA has established an urban and hip-hop scene in Japan.
THOUGHTS: heeeee'ssss back XD overall pretty solid single, but the song doesn't really change up in terms of beats or anything. I was expecting a huge build up or something XP the song's name is this entry's password.

Mika Nakashima - SAKURA ~Hanagasumi~ (DAISHI DANCE)
INFO: a popular singer in Japan as well as throughout Asia. she usually releases slower music like ballads and sometimes jazz. winner of Best New Artist in 2001, her first few singles sold hundreds of thousands, some selling out the first day. she sang a theme for the popular anime series Gundam Seed. she also acts in the new NANA productions, starring in the lead role.
THOUGHTS: she's back with the ballads and I upped this alternate version on her single cause its more poppish and upbeat :P

INFO: a young R&B singer who started dancing and singing at a young age. she actually has released some singles in the UK as well as Japan. after three singles in Japan, she released her debut album, "Diamondlily" on February 7, 2007.
THOUGHTS: at first I thought her new song was too slow, but it grew on me with a memorable melody and chorus. ^_^

Aya Kamiki - SUNDAY MORNING
INFO: a solo singer with a styled mix of rock/punk, breaking her away from the rest under her current label, GIZA. she made her debut in March 2006 with the single “Communication Break” and later following that up with a cover of “Pierrot” by the popular duo B’z. her debut album “Secret Code” released in July 2006.
THOUGHTS: really like the intro in this song, its kinda dreamy. overall the song is very laidback and chill compared with her usual upbeat style.

INFO: a band from Okinawa with Maki as the lead singer, Yuusuke as the rapper and backup singer, Kazuto and MEG on guitar, mACKAz on Bass, and SASSY on drums. they debuted in January 2005 with the song "PRIDE", which was a theme song for the anime Gundam Seed and became a hit. since then they have released an album "G∞VER" in September 2005.
THOUGHTS: pretty sweet new single by them. starts out pretty rocking and stays that way throughout the song, except the verses. and is that Yuusuke singing? hehe

Miliyah Kato - good-bye my teenage
INFO: a young J-urban singer and writer who solo debuted in 2004 with the single "Never Let Go". she started writing her own songs at the age of 14. her debut album “Rose” was released in October 2005. she has also collaborated with various other artists like m-flo, KM-MARKIT, and Heartsdales.
THOUGHTS: oo she sampled Namie for her new single XD haha, but love the b-side with the sweet vocals and beat.

INFO: a half American, OLIVIA started immersing herself with music from a young age. born in Okinawa, she lived in both America and Japan during her childhood. she began her music career in the group D&D, which stood for Dance & Dream. after several singles, she started her solo career and has eight albums to date. Utada Hikaru - HEART STATION
INFO: known as Hikki to her fans, Utada Hikaru was born in New York and even attended Columbia University before getting married (yet as of early 2007 she has been divorced). she adds a lot of R&B into her music and released a CD in the US before becoming immensely popular in Japan, going under the name of Cubic U. she also released another US CD under the name Utada in 2004.
THOUGHTS: beautiful new song by Hikki~ ^__^ yay. still got the kinda dreamy feeling in there from the last album and that's not a bad thing. who's excited about her new album coming out in March!?

Yuna Ito - alone again
INFO: a half Japanese and Korean solo singer that made her major debut in both acting and singing in the movie "NANA", playing Serizawa Reira. that role landed her a chart topping hit as well as a few awards. she was born in Hawaii and moved to Japan after high school. in December 2006, she continued her role as Reira in the second NANA movie.
THOUGHTS: this song is sooooo preeetttty~ off her sophomore album, I just keep it on repeat just cause I love it so much. ^_^ she should have released this song as a single instead of that 'Urban Mermaid' song. >_>

INFO: m-flo used to be made up of DJ Taku, rapper VERBAL, and singer LISA. they all met in an international school in Japan. LISA is half Colombian and Japanese while VERBAL is Korean. they released two albums until 2002 when LISA went to do her solo career. afterwards, m-flo featured artists to do the singing part. recently they have announced that there will be no more 'loves' collabs and their future projects are currently unknown.
THOUGHTS: they lied! THIS song will be the last of the 'loves' collabs! and its pretty cool too, though sucks that YOSHIKA and Ryohei got stuck with only like...2 verses. >_>

ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION - Korogaru Iwa, Kimi ni Asa ga Furu 転がる岩、君に朝が降る
INFO: a Jrock band that first formed in 1996 by a music club in high school. the four member band consists of Goto Masafumi, Kita Kensuke, Yamada Takahiro, and Ijichi Kiyoshi. before signing with Sony, they did a lot of independent releases before they officially debuted in 2003.
THOUGHTS: yay more Ajikan~ they still keep on churning out the great rock music. glad they're so stable and consistent, so if you liked their other songs, you'll like this song too.

LISA - crave
INFO: half Colombian and half Japanese Elizabeth Sakura Narita, or as she's better known as LISA, was the lead singer in the group m-flo. however after 5 albums she left in 2002 to pursue her own solo career. she also writes and producers other artists under the Rhythm Zone label.
THOUGHTS: well, she certainly started off on a different direction. instead of R&B, she turned to disco-y tracks as per her new mini-album title 'ready to disco'. the song's title is this week's password.

BENNIE K - MONOCHROME
INFO: a J-urban duo with YUKI doing most of the vocals and CICO who does the rapping. they've been around for awhile, since 2001 with the single "Melody", but haven't been that popular until recently with their single, "Sunrise". so far they released five albums and two mini albums.
THOUGHTS: after a rather disappointing album, they're back strong with a song that reminds me of 'Sky'. and that's why I like it XD

INFO: a popular solo R&B singer, he's known for his falsetto voice. he's also known for not looking Japanese, even though he is. he started releasing music in 1995 with the single, "Precious Junk". in 2005 he released “UTABAKA”, a best album to celebrate his 10th anniversary in the music industry.

INFO: a new urban duo that were just signed under Avex. MIKA provides the rap and ME provides the vocals. they released a mini album before officially debuting with the single "Fly Out" in 2007.
THOUGHTS: their first full length album just came out and its pretty good! glad there's more R&B duos out there ^__^ this opening track shows off their interesting vocals.

FLOW - Tabibito　旅人
INFO: a Jrock band with five members: brothers Take and Koshi, Keigo, Got's, and Iwasaki. the two brothers started the band back in 1998 and members were added until 2000. they are most known for their 2003 single "Burasuta" (blaster) and singing theme songs for the popular anime Naruto.
THOUGHTS: the a-side to their new single was too slow for me, so upped this song instead XD still kinda slow, but it picks up during the chorus.

INFO: a solo Jpop/J-urban singer who originally tried out for Tsunku’s Morning Musume. after not making it she went solo and released her first single "Take Back" in 2000. however she didn't get very popular until she did a duet with BoA, a Kpop/Jpop singer, and sang the theme songs for Final Fantasy X-2. she also did a cover of the theme song for the movie Cutie Honey.
THOUGHTS: FINALLY. a freaking urban song from her!!! its been toooooo long Ku. anyways, the rest of her album is SO much better than that 2006 crap "Black Cherry" so YAY. ^___^

Aoyama Thelma - Soba ni Iru ne feat SoulJa
INFO: a new and young J-urban/Jpop artist. part Japanese and Trinidad, she started up her career being featured in other J-urban artist's tracks. her collaboration "Koko ni Iru yo" with the rapper, SoulJa, has become a hit on the charts. her debut single, "ONE WAY", dropped early September 2007.
THOUGHTS: the answer song to the wonderful track "Koko ni Iru yo" ^__^ and I think I like this version better. more singing with Thelma and SoulJa's part is more in the background. wonderful and its hit the #1 spot on the oricon!

INFO: a trio consisting of vocalist Kiyoe, and guitarists Hotaka and Yoshiki. first forming when the three were in college they gradually grew to be a popular local indies band. in 2005 they signed under SONY and released their first single "Sakura" in March 2006. their name came from when Hotaka and Yoshiki were nicknamed in grade school.
THOUGHTS: their usual 'feel good' rap takes a slightly more serious tone here and that's not a bad thing. might be my favorite song by them ^_^

Amano Tsukiko - HEAVEN'S GATE
INFO: a female Jrocker who's been around since 2001, starting that year with indies releases and later with the maxi single "Bodaiju". she likes to sing songs from rock to quieter ballads. so far she has released four albums. she also sings theme songs for the video games series Fatal Frame.
THOUGHTS: whoo new Amano~ hmm wonder why she's only doing indies stuff now. O_o anywhos, this song is still the great rock by Amano that I love.

THOUGHTS: I'm a bit meeeh with her new single, but she needs more exposure. (ha actually I dunno, she was nominated at the Gold Disc Awards haha) the song has too much sounds going on, making it a little incoherent.

INFO: a half Japanese and half Russian American who got her career started by doing some modeling in her mid-teens. it wasn’t until 2002 when she began a singing career in the duo Spin Aqua. later on, she quit the duo and went solo after being married and having a child. she released “Taste My Beat”, a solo mini album in 2005.
THOUGHTS: ok...so the cover freaked me out a little, but the song itself is great. just gotta love her rocking sound. the song's title is this week's password.

INFO: a trio consisting of lead vocalist Yuri, rapper Motsu, and programmer/guitarist/keyboard T-Kimura. their style changed over the years, from europop/techno to trance to rock. the individual styles of Yuri and Motsu have also changed throught the years, since their debut in 1997. their popularity received a great boost after they did a lot of themes for the anime "Initial D".
THOUGHTS: haha I love the rocking sound of this track. back when move was just getting into the rock phase of their career. (what are they up to now...? O_o)

Do As Infinity - Guru Guru
INFO: Do As Infinity (DAI) is a group with Tomiko Van as the lead singer, Ryo as the guitarist, and Dai as the main composer/writer/guitarist. Dai started to group and held auditions for who the lead singer could be and picked Tomiko. a pretty popular band that mixes pop and rock. Dai left the group a few albums into their career and then they disbanded on Sept 30th 2005. ;_;
THOUGHTS: dang its been like 2 1/2 years since they disbanded. this was one of the first songs I heard by them back in 2001, off their "New World" album.

THOUGHTS: hehe and they're back with another solid track. some great rock music. like how they're always consistent with their releases.

Ayumi Hamasaki - (don't) Leave me alone
INFO: one, if not the most, recognized name in the Jpop industry. one of the top selling artists in Japan, she started out doing some modeling at a young age and trying out acting before becoming bored with both. by chance she met with Avex's head who encouraged her to try singing and writing her own songs. she debuted in 1998 and since then her success has boomed. she does mostly pop music, but sometimes fuses that with rock or R&B.
THOUGHTS: well her new album is a great improvement over...uh...what was her last album? haha yea, didn't really leave much of an impression on me. ^^; this song is some loud and aggressive pop.

INFO: a J-urban duo of WEEVA, who sings, and Jam, who raps, plays the piano, produces, and composes. both members write lyrics and they met in 2003. their style of music fuses classical piano with R&B and hip-hop beats. they debuted with the single "Love Song" in mid July 2005.
THOUGHTS: hmm well I've been ignoring their music for this journal, yet their new album dropped recently and its pretty solid. here's a soothing track with nice piano and string themes against an R&B beat.

INFO: a five member pop and rock band with lead singer TAKUYA∞. they formed in 2003 but didn't officially debut until July 2005 with the single "D-tecnoLife", a theme for the popular anime "Bleach". later, they released their debut album "Timeless". UVER (or uber) means "over" in German.
THOUGHTS: their new album has some good tracks on it, despite some of their ok singles. this song is a little different and I love the hook/chorus.

INFO: a hip-pop duo of GIORGIO 13, who writes the composition and lyrics as well as raps, and TOKO who sings. GIORGIO 13 is half Italian and Japanese and grew up with a lot of hip-hop influence. likewise, TOKO was surrounded with jazz in her childhood. the duo first released a mini album in 2005 called "Soooo' Fly".
THOUGHTS: nice new mini album by them. they seriously are the R&B version of mihimaru GT lol. anywho, here's a midtempo track that shows off their unique style.

MISIA - Ishin Denshin 以心伝心
INFO: a solo singer whose real name is Misaki Ito. her stage name is a mix of her real name and the word Asia. she started pursuing her dreams of being a singer at a young age and after not making a lot of auditions, finally signed with BMG and debuted in 1998. known for her R&B style and her dreadlocks, she became popular after her second single and her album "Father Mother Brother Sister".
THOUGHTS: sweet opening track to bring in her new album. gotta love her personal style to R&B in this aggressive track.

INFO: a solo singer whose real name is Asada Kaori. she's fluent in both Japanese and English and moved to the USA in 1998. she writes and composes all her songs, as well as play the guitar and piano. she has worked with many producers from around the world and so far has released several albums, the most recent being "Thinking Out Loud".
THOUGHTS: omg, like how can I NOT but BONNIE PINK on the top 2007 list?! sure, the album was a little disappointing, but the singles leading up to it were awesome, like this one~~ ^^

BUMP OF CHICKEN - Mayday
INFO: BUMP OF CHICKEN (BOC for short) is made up of Motou Fujiwara, Hiroaki Masukawa, Yoshifumi Naoi, Hideo Masu. a Jrock group that's been around since 1999 but really gained popularity with their 2001 single, "Tentai Kansoku". their most recent album, "orbital period", released late 2007 was their first album since 2004.
THOUGHTS: when this song first came out as a single, I was like, meh. but then the video came out and then their album is great and I just started to really really like this song. hehe

Dohzi-T - summer days feat Beni Arashiro
INFO: a J-urban rapper who first made his debut in 1999 with Kohei. since then he has released three albums and a 'best-of' album and has worked with various other artists.
THOUGHTS: love the chorus with Beni taking it away~ get stuck in my head a lot hehe. a rather mellow rap song, the way I like it.

DOUBLE - Nokoribi -eternal BED-　残り火
INFO: DOUBLE used to be a R&B duo of sisters Sachiko and Takako. they released one album together until Sachiko suddenly passed away from a brain hemorrhage. after mourning for a about a year, Takako started to release music again, still using the name DOUBLE.
THOUGHTS: this might be my favorite DOUBLE song... after the pretty bad singles but above average album, DOUBLE comes back with this great R&B song that samples an older track back when she sang with her sister. ^__^ love it~

K - KI.ZU.NA ~wasurenai yo~ ～忘れないよ～
INFO: a Korean singer (real name, Kang Yoon-sung) who started releasing singles in Japanese after his attempts at the Korean music market produced mediocre results. he released his first Japanese single, "over...", for the drama H2 in March 2005. he released his first Japanese album “Beyond the Sea” in January 2006.
THOUGHTS: mmmm K... hehehehe yea, this was up like...in October but I couldn't resist. I just love this song cause its soooo beautiful~~ he should have released this as a single, not that collab with ET-KING. XP

Koda Kumi - BUT
INFO: a solo Jpop/J-urban singer who originally tried out for Tsunku’s Morning Musume. after not making it she went solo and released her first single "Take Back" in 2000. however she didn't get very popular until she did a duet with BoA, a Kpop/Jpop singer, and sang the theme songs for Final Fantasy X-2. she also did a cover of the theme song for the movie Cutie Honey.
THOUGHTS: so 2006 I thought was a pretty crappy year for Ku, like all that popularity got to the label and her head and released bad music. but first single of 2007 impressed me. ^_^ something a little different but catchy~ here's to 'Kingdom', her album coming out January 2008!

INFO: m-flo used to be made up of DJ Taku, rapper VERBAL, and singer LISA. they all met in an international school in Japan. LISA is half Colombian and Japanese while VERBAL is Korean. they released two albums until 2002 when LISA went to do her solo career. afterwards, m-flo featured artists to do the singing part. recently they have announced that there will be no more 'loves' collabs and their future projects are currently unknown.
THOUGHTS: they started with Kuri for their 'loves' run, and they ended it with her too. catchy, fun, and overall just great m-flo goodness with the bonus of Kuri~ ^_^ still waiting on what m-flo's gonna do in the future tho (unless I totally missed out on something..?)

Namie Amuro - Hello
INFO: one of the biggest names in Jpop history, Namie started out in a group called THE SUPER MONKEYS but then left to do a solo career. however, she left the music scene for a while when she had her kid and her popularity kind of dropped. now she's still a famous singer but now focuses more on a R&B or J-urban style. she was also in the J-urban collaboration SUITE CHIC.
THOUGHTS: my love for Namie bordered on obsession for a while this year ^^; that album was just hot~ this song is cute, catchy, yet simple R&B track that can be used for any cellphone commercial lol.

Remioromen - Wonderful & Beautiful
INFO: a Jrock band with three members, Fujimaki Ryouta on guitar and as lead vocalist, Maeda Keisuke on bass, and Jinguji Osamu on drums. they formed in 2000 but didn't start releasing music in 2003 and have since released two albums. their name is a jumble of selected words by each band member through rock-paper-scissors.
THOUGHTS: their latest single really impressed me that I had to upload something for this entry~ really like the mellow rock and the vocals ^_^

RURUTIA - Ryuukou 流光
INFO: a solo artist, she started out in 2001 with the single "Itoshigoyo". her music ranges from surreal sounding to rock accompanied with her airy voice. not much personal information is known about her, even her age and real name are mysteries. after four albums, she changed labels to Phoenix Records and released her first single, "Spinel", with them in November 2005.
THOUGHTS: love how this song builds up to the chorus. it sounds serious, yet delicate at the same time. and of course, since its RURUTIA, its just pretty~

SoulJa - Koko ni Iru yo feat Aoyama Thelma　ここにいるよ
INFO: a newcomer to the hip-hop and rap industry, he's half Japanese and Belgium. with a classical background, he got interested in hip-hop after going to high school in America. after single release in 2006 with "First Contact", he later grew in popularity with the 2007 single featuring another new artist, Aoyama Thelma. in November 2007, he released a mini album, "Spirits".
THOUGHTS: love love this song~ ^__^ very toned down for a rap song and the chorus is so great. even if you don't like hip-hop you should give it a listen. Aoyama Thelma is coming out with "Soba ni Iru ne" in 2008 featuring Soulja ;)

Yuna Ito - I'm Here
INFO: a half Japanese and Korean solo singer that made her major debut in both acting and singing in the movie "NANA", playing Serizawa Reira. that role landed her a chart topping hit as well as a few awards. she was born in Hawaii and moved to Japan after high school. in December 2006, she continued her role as Reira in the second NANA movie.
THOUGHTS: gotta love Yuna~ this is a little similar to my 2006 fav, "losin'", which is probably why I like "I'm Here" too. some upbeat dramatic pop for this ballad princess.

INFO: known as Kuri to her fans, she's the daughter of an African American father and a Korean mother. she made her debut in 1999 with the single “Eternal Memories”. her style varies from soft ballads to urban. she speaks both Japanese and English fluently and graduated from Sophia University.
THOUGHTS: hehe her new single just makes me smile. ^_^ cute mix of pop and R&B. good single to follow up her latest album.

Ketsumeishi - Fuyu Monogatari
INFO: a rap group that formed back in 1993. now with members Ookura and Ryo as the MCs/rappers, Ryoji with vocals, and DJ Kohno as the DJ, they debuted in 1999 with the single "Kocchi Oide". their name is a mixture of a Chinese herb and Japanese slang.
THOUGHTS: ok, is it just me, or is this song a little similar to their hit "Sakura"? maybe that's why I like it so much XD

INFO: a young new J-urban artist who in July 2006 released a debut mini-album, “ALL MY GIRLS”, which was produced by Tiny Voice & Nao’ymt. she has also worked with other J-urban artists in the collaboration "I SAY YEAH!" and on her debut single.
THOUGHTS: wow wow this song is hot. yea, the lyrics are a little out there, but still its got the production, beat, and vocals to make a pleasing dance track. already preordered her debut album that's out in 2 days!! ^___^

Mizrock - Best Friend
INFO: formerly known as Miz, she's from Hokkaido and a pop/rock artist who started releasing music under a Swedish producer with the single "New Day" in 2004. after releasing her debut album "Say It's Forever", she shortly released an all English album called "Dreams". although she mostly releases in Japan, she usually makes Sweden her place to record and shoot videos.
THOUGHTS: change of genre for her. well, kinda, she's always been pop as well as rock. anywho, her new single is an enjoyable pop track, even if the title is a bit lame XD

ERIKA - Destination Nowhere
INFO: a model, actress, and now singer, Erika Sawwajiri first released a single under the name, Kaoru Amane, who is a character in the drama/movie "Taiyou no Uta". in the drama version, Erika played Kaoru Amane and released a very successful single. for her next single, she now simply goes under the name "ERIKA".
THOUGHTS: I'm surprised that I like her new single. (haha..yea) its actually kinda catchy despite using the same old formula ^^;

INFO: a J-urban artist who formerly went by the name Asuka before a change in record labels. she made her debut in December 2005 with the single "Beautiful Life". she made her debut album under this name in August 2006.
THOUGHTS: new album by her! not as good as her first and that's cause her singles weren't as strong. anyways, really enjoyed this song, even if I have heard the beat somewhere else before XP

mihimaru GT - I SHOULD BE SO LUCKY
INFO: a guy/girl duo consisting of Akutsu Hiroko and Mitsuyuki Miyake. both sing, rap, and write lyrics for their songs, creating an interesting fusion of rap and pop. they debuted in 2003 with the single "Yakusoku" and released their first album "mihimarhythm" in 2004.
THOUGHTS: title is cheesy, even sounds cheesy, yet its so freaking catchy O_o well, at least I hear a little bit of the old mihimaru in there hehe.

Ayaka Hirahara - Ima, Kaze no Naka de
INFO: from Tokyo, she's a solo singer with a powerful voice. her debut single "Jupiter" was a major hit and launched her into the Jpop music scene. the single stayed on the charts for over 70 weeks. she now has released five albums.
THOUGHTS: ooo a pretty single from her. ^^ dang, has she been away that long? I don't recall her last single... haha, well in any case glad this single is good.

INFO: a Jrock band with five members: brothers Take and Koshi, Keigo, Got's, and Iwasaki. the two brothers started the band back in 1998 and members were added until 2000. they are most known for their 2003 single "Burasuta" (blaster) and singing theme songs for the popular anime Naruto.
THOUGHTS: whee, a rocking b-side track to their new single. wasn't really feeling the Latin influenced a-side. ^^; the song's name is the password this week.

Tokyo Jihen - Killer Tune
requested; INFO: a band led by the famous singer Shiina Ringo. after ending her solo career, Shiina created a band with her as lead singer, guitarist Hirama, keyboardist HZM from PE'Z, drummer Hata, and the bassist Kameda. they released several singles and an album before two members left in 2005 and Izawa Ichiyou and Ukigumo joined.

ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION - After Dark
INFO: a Jrock band that first formed in 1996 by a music club in high school. the four member band consists of Goto Masafumi, Kita Kensuke, Yamada Takahiro, and Ijichi Kiyoshi. before signing with Sony, they did a lot of independent releases before they officially debuted in 2003.
THOUGHTS: yay Ajikan's back with a great single! dang, didn't know that they were gone for so long...O_O anyways, the video was cute too haha.

AYUSE KOZUE - FOLLOW ME
INFO: a new Jpop artist who grew up in Chiba and started pursuing dance and singing during her junior and high school years. she debuted in April 2006 with the single "boyfriend". her first debut album released in October of 2007.
THOUGHTS: wooonderful debut album! glad I grabbed a limited edition copy~ ^^ overall its sugar pop that makes me happy, but this is a little more on the serious side. love her vocals.

INFO: a Jrock band with members Shou (vocals), Hiroto (guitar), Tora (guitar), Saga (bass), and Nao (drums). Nao formed the band in 2004 and they released their first maxi single in July that same year.
THOUGHTS: ooo dramatic rock done right. the lead singer's voice may not be for everybody, but it works here.

INFO: 2BAKKA is an all male J-urban trio and BENNIE K is a J-urban female duo.
THOUGHTS: hmm interesting sound...hard guitar riffs and piano that has a touch of country. its alright, don't think 2BAKKA is all that great so YUKI from BK saves the song. the song's title is the password this week.

ZEEBRA - Shinin' Like a Diamond feat SPHERE of INFLUENCE & May J.
INFO: known as the father of Japanese Hip-hop for he was the one who first introduced rapping to Japan. he was part of the rap group King Giddra until making his solo debut in 1997. later in 1998 he released his first album called "The Rhyme Animal". with his influence and popularity as a rapper, ZEEBRA has established an urban and hip-hop scene in Japan.
THOUGHTS: hmm his latest album is on the iffy side, but love this track. and I think its just cause May J.'s in it... man her upcoming single and album are gonna be hot ^__^

YUI - Last Train
INFO: a young artist who made her debut with the single “feel my soul” in February 2005. she does a slower pop style, mostly influenced with acoustic guitars. before getting a record deal, she carried her guitar around and performed a lot locally. she released her debut album in February 2006.
THOUGHTS: great b-side to her 2005 single "Tomorrow's Way". this is just another great midtempo acoustic song that YUI's come to be known for.

Ayumi Hamasaki - I am...　
INFO: one, if not the most, recognized name in the Jpop industry. one of the top selling artists in Japan, she started out doing some modeling at a young age and trying out acting before becoming bored with both. by chance she met with Avex's head who encouraged her to try singing and writing her own songs. she debuted in 1998 and since then her success has boomed. she does mostly pop music, but sometimes fuses that with rock or R&B.
THOUGHTS: whee Ayu from 5 years ago! the opening track as well as the album title. starts out with just her voice, but slowly builds up. one of my favs on that album.

CHEMISTRY - PIECES OF A DREAM
INFO: a popular R&B duo made up of Yoshikuni Dochin and Kaname Kawabata. on the audition television program, Asayan, they made their big break and have been successful ever since. they debuted in 2001 with their hit single "PIECES OF A DREAM", which sold over 2 million copies.
THOUGHTS: their debut single! and back when their music was mostly on the R&B side instead of ballad after ballad. x.x wish they'd go back to stuff like this.

L'Arc~en~Ciel - DAYBREAK'S BELL
INFO: a Jrock band with lead singer Hyde and band members Tetsu, Ken, and Yukihiro. the band started out in 1991 and released their first album, "DUNE", with an indies label. even after some member changes and several hiatuses, including some solo pursuits from HYDE, the band has still remained very popular throughout the years. their name means 'rainbow' in French.
THOUGHTS: and their back with another chart topping single. this one's not so much my style, but sure to please their fans.

INFO: a solo singer with a styled mix of rock/punk, breaking her away from the rest under her current label, GIZA. she made her debut in March 2006 with the single “Communication Break” and later following that up with a cover of “Pierrot” by the popular duo B’z. her debut album “Secret Code” released in July 2006.

INFO: she was the lead singer in the band ZONE. ZONE went on hiatus when she went solo and she released two singles in late 2004. after the disbandment and a several years on hiatus, she came back in 2007 with the single "Key ~Yume kara Samete~".
THOUGHTS: ok, anybody remember that girl band ZONE? and their lead singer? what about her two solid solo singles? well, she's finally back ^___^ IEI. song is alright, a little bit of dramatic pop, but I'm just happy she's singing again.

INFO: a Taiwanese trio of Faye (vocals), Ian (keyboard & guitar), and Real (main guitarist). earning a reputation of being the Chinese Do As Infinity, they are very popular after releasing the hit song "Lydia". their group name can stand for either their initials or for their first album title "The Fairyland In Reality", released in 2004.
THOUGHTS: oooo cool new album by them ^__^ really like this track, its a mix of rock, rap, great vocals, and uh...opera-ish vocals? O_o dunno how to describe the last part. ^^;

INFO: a solo artist who's part American, she started off in a contest called Kokuminteki Bishojo Contest and became a finalist without any formal training. she speaks English and Japanese fluently and does more of a R&B/pop style. she debuted with the single "Harmony" back in 2004 and released her first album, "Beni" in 2005.

Namie Amuro - Put'em Up
INFO: one of the biggest names in Jpop history, Namie started out in a group called THE SUPER MONKEYS but then left to do a solo career. however, she left the music scene for a while when she had her kid and her popularity kind of dropped. now she's still a famous singer but now focuses more on a R&B or J-urban style. she was also in the J-urban collaboration SUITE CHIC.
THOUGHTS: I've been on a little Namie obsessing lately, and so why not upload the song that really got me into her music? I believe this was her first true R&B single released back in 2003.

bleh, hope these updates won't continue to be like 3 weeks apart. .__. I think I'm biting off more than I can chew this semester >_< anyways, that's not the only other reason for the late update... being iPod-less for like 2 weeks hasn't been good. (when my 160gb gets in I'll be a happy camper~! ^_^) so yea, this week is a little different, only have a few select new releases (the ones that have been stuck in my head), a few random songs, and finally getting around to some of the months old requests. enjoy!

Koda Kumi - Ai no Uta 愛のうた
INFO: a solo Jpop/J-urban singer who originally tried out for Tsunku’s Morning Musume. after not making it she went solo and released her first single "Take Back" in 2000. however she didn't get very popular until she did a duet with BoA, a Kpop/Jpop singer, and sang the theme songs for Final Fantasy X-2. she also did a cover of the theme song for the movie Cutie Honey.
THOUGHTS: hmm...kinda bleh with the new release, but it has gotten stuck in my head a few times. the video and covers are pretty ^^

Ayumi Hamasaki - talkin' 2 myself
INFO: one, if not the most, recognized name in the Jpop industry. one of the top selling artists in Japan, she started out doing some modeling at a young age and trying out acting before becoming bored with both. by chance she met with Avex's head who encouraged her to try singing and writing her own songs. she debuted in 1998 and since then her success has boomed. she does mostly pop music, but sometimes fuses that with rock or R&B.
THOUGHTS: oo yay, a dramatic pop song from her. XD its in the same vein as her previous songs, but a lot more enjoyable than the summer pop she always releases. haha.

ayaka - Why
INFO: a young singer and song writer from Osaka with a strong voice. she first started out inspired by gospel music and performing live with friends during her freshman year in high school. wanting to continue with music, she attended a private music school. she made her major debut with the single "I believe" in early 2006.
THOUGHTS: so with her double A side single, this one takes the cake. its her strong point, a ballad, but a lot more memorable than her last one, "Jewelry day".

Emi Hinouchi - GOODIE MEMORIES
INFO: a solo artist who was discovered by m-flo's TAKU and has been working with him for most of her music. she officially debuted in 2002 with the single "Magic/World". after her first album, "Dramatiques", was released in 2003, she has mostly been working with other artists. she lived in Taiwan for most of her childhood, so she knows both Chinese and Japanese.
THOUGHTS: yay a great single from her~ so glad she's coming back haha. the background is similar to the BONNIE PINK and m-flo collab, but holds its own to be a great pop track.

Hirai Ken - fake star
INFO: a popular solo R&B singer, he's known for his falsetto voice. he's also known for not looking Japanese, even though he is. he started releasing music in 1995 with the single, "Precious Junk". in 2005 he released “UTABAKA”, a best album to celebrate his 10th anniversary in the music industry.
THOUGHTS: first off, whoa with the video O_o getting a little too close there hahaha. anyways, the song is a refreshing change for Ken. its not a ballad nor a crazy pop song but instead a slick jazz/R&B track.

NaNa - Movin' on
INFO: a new face in the Jpop and J-urban industry. she has worked with other artists, namely ZEEBRA for an album version of the track "Slow Down" and the dance group EXILE. also an accomplished dancer and choreographer, she started a solo singing career in 2007 with the single, "Movin' on".
THOUGHTS: ooo solid, solid debut. ^_^ its some cute R&B/pop that gets stuck in your head a lot. at least it did for me XD recommended if you like melody. or Emi Hinouchi.

three NATION - OLIVIA once again
INFO: a R&B trio with JUN as vocals, and two MCs: EIGO and ZANE. they formed together in 2000 in Yokohama after meeting each other through international school and studying abroad from the United States. they debuted in July 2003 and released their first album "3n" in 2004.
THOUGHTS: so...that Emi song this week with the baby voice made me remember this song XD one of 3N's strongest tracks, its a midtempo R&B song. now, if only they'd release something >_> I'm sick of waiting!

SEAMO - Kokoro no Koe feat AZU 心の声
INFO: a J-urban artist whose real name is Takada Naoki. he has also collaborated with various other artists like Miliyah Kato, nobodyknows+, and BENNIE K. he released his first single in March 2005. he gained a lot of popularity with his 2006 single, "Mata Aimashou".
THOUGHTS: so, not such a big fan of SEAMO, but this song with AZU has to be my favorite track by him. everything from the beat to her vocals just fit so nicely ^^ oh, and the video has one of the best and most satisfying endings! XD this artist is the password this week.

NANA starring MIKA NAKASHIMA - Hitoiro　一色
requested; INFO: a popular singer in Japan as well as throughout Asia. she usually releases slower music like ballads and sometimes jazz. winner of Best New Artist in 2001, her first few singles sold hundreds of thousands, some selling out the first day. she sang a theme for the popular anime series Gundam Seed. she also acts in the new NANA productions, starring in the lead role.
THOUGHTS: now that I look back, never really liked her rock music. but hey, this track is more enjoyable than others.

requested; INFO: SNoW grew up in United States and started writing and singing in her teens. traveling between Japan and the United States to work on her music, she released an indies single "Yes" in November 2004, which attracted some attention. now under Sony, she made her official debut in July 2005 with the single "Hanabi Made Ato Sukoshi". she also attends the University of Santa Monica in LA.
THOUGHTS: what to say? anything by SNoW is great if you like acoustics and strong compositions. this was off her "Sakasama no Chou" single.

Utada Hikaru - Kiss & Cry
INFO: known as Hikki to her fans, Utada Hikaru was born in New York and even attended Columbia University before getting married (yet as of early 2007 she has been divorced). she adds a lot of R&B into her music and released a CD in the US before becoming immensely popular in Japan, going under the name of Cubic U. she also released another US CD under the name Utada in 2004.
THOUGHTS: hahaha I just laughed when I heard part of this song. she reused a melody from her "Exodus" album XD oh well, its happened before with Hikki. anyways, a great pop track from her! yay.

L'Arc~en~Ciel - MY HEART DRAWS A DREAM
INFO: a Jrock band with lead singer Hyde and band members Tetsu, Ken, and Yukihiro. the band started out in 1991 and released their first album, "DUNE", with an indies label. even after some member changes and several hiatuses, including some solo pursuits from HYDE, the band has still remained very popular throughout the years. their name means 'rainbow' in French.
THOUGHTS: another solid single by L'Arc. long time fans and general fans of rock should be pleased. still amazes me how high Hyde can sing O_o

INFO: a Korean singer (real name, Kang Yoon-sung) who started releasing singles in Japanese after his attempts at the Korean music market produced mediocre results. he released his first Japanese single, "over...", for the drama H2 in March 2005. he released his first Japanese album “Beyond the Sea” in January 2006.
THOUGHTS: mmm always could go for more K... hehe. its similar to his "The Day" and "Girlfriend" singles, being more optimistic than sad ballady. XD

INFO: a band that just signed with a record company, but released an indies mini album in 2003. the members are Chikako, Nasaya, Shusaku, and Shingo. they officially debuted in 2004 and released their first album in April 2005.
THOUGHTS: talk about one of the underrated bands in Japan. :/ their newest album is pretty darn good. here's a track, and if you like Ikimonogakari, give them a try and buy their stuff. this artist is the password this week.

DOUBLE - Reflex
INFO: DOUBLE used to be a R&B duo of sisters Sachiko and Takako. they released one album together until Sachiko suddenly passed away from a brain hemorrhage. after mourning for a about a year, Takako started to release music again, still using the name DOUBLE.
THOUGHTS: good album from her ^_^ there's a variety of tracks on it (which is good, considering a lot of her singles were club songs). here's the midtempo title track.

the brilliant green - Stand by me
INFO: a band with Tommy (Tomoko Kawase) singing, Ryo Matsui on guitar, and Shunsaku Okuda on bass. in 1995 Shunsau and Ryo heard Tommy at a singing contest and asked her join. they released their first Maxi single in 1997 and have grown in popularity since then. Tommy also releases solo music under two different names: Tommy february6 and Tommy heavenly6. Ryo also has his own project that started in 2004.
THOUGHTS: ooo they're back from their 5 year hiatus for their 10 anniversary! yay~ its good to hear Tommy without the extreme sounds of punk rock or retro dance music XD

AYUSE KOZUE - Sundae Love
INFO: a new Jpop artist who grew up in Chiba and started pursuing dance and singing during her junior and high school years. she debuted in April 2006 with the single "boyfriend".
THOUGHTS: wow I'm a sucker for bubblegum pop. XD been replaying this song for a while now ^^; not as R&B as her past singles, but then again she's always been more pop than R&B.

Tamaki Nami - Brightdown
INFO: she won a competition, Sony Music Japan Audition in 2003, to sing a theme song for the anime Gundam Seed and is now very popular from her anime and game tie-ins and dancing. her music is mainly in the dance/pop category. she debuted with the single "Believe" and she now has three albums and a compilation album.
THOUGHTS: well well, she took a different turn. XD pop/rock for her this time around haha. like it better than her dance songs though.

INFO: a solo singer whose real name is Asada Kaori. she's fluent in both Japanese and English and moved to the USA in 1998. she writes and composes all her songs, as well as play the guitar and piano. she has worked with many producers from around the world and so far has released several albums, the most recent being "Golden Tears".
THOUGHTS: I know, I know, you people all get the picture that I'm a huge BONNIE fan. ^__^ that being said, I'm sorry to say that her album was a little disappointing, for BONNIE standards. but this track is definitely the best of the new tracks. ^_^

HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR - Dreams
INFO: a band from Okinawa with Maki as the lead singer, Yuusuke as the rapper and backup singer, Kazuto and MEG on guitar, mACKAz on Bass, and SASSY on drums. they debuted in January 2005 with the song "PRIDE", which was a theme song for the anime Gundam Seed and became a hit. since then they have released an album "G∞VER" in September 2005.
THOUGHTS: great attempt for them at a slower song. though I'm not so sure about Yuusuke's singing, especially when he attempts to harmonizes with Maki. :/ still a pretty song for them.

Aya Kamiki - Ashita no Tame ni　明日のために
INFO: a solo singer with a styled mix of rock/punk, breaking her away from the rest under her current label, GIZA. she made her debut in March 2006 with the single “Communication Break” and later following that up with a cover of “Pierrot” by the popular duo B’z. her debut album “Secret Code” released in July 2006.
THOUGHTS: her new single is on the mediocre side. its not awful, but for me its a little forgettable. will please her fans though.

CHEMISTRY - This Night
INFO: a popular R&B duo made up of Yoshikuni Dochin and Kaname Kawabata. on the audition television program, Asayan, they made their big break and have been successful ever since. they debuted in 2001 with their hit single "PIECES OF A DREAM", which sold over 2 million copies.
THOUGHTS: wow, its been a looong while since I liked a CHEMISTRY single! XD haha. they go back to their R&B influences with this song, which is probably the reason why I like it more than their recent stuff.

Mizrock - Good bye, yesterday
INFO: formerly known as Miz, she's from Hokkaido and a pop/rock artist who started releasing music under a Swedish producer with the single "New Day" in 2004. after releasing her debut album "Say It's Forever", she shortly released an all English album called "Dreams". although she mostly releases in Japan, she makes Sweden her place to record and shoot videos.
THOUGHTS: ooo a name change? interesting to chose a previous album title XD anywho, glad she's back to making music and here's the title track to her new mini album. a bit on the mellow side. this artist is the password this entry.

FLOW - Answer
INFO: a Jrock band with five members: brothers Take and Koshi, Keigo, Got's, and Iwasaki. the two brothers started the band back in 1998 and members were added until 2000. they are most known for their 2003 single "Burasuta" (blaster) and singing theme songs for the popular anime Naruto.
THOUGHTS: really like their new single. compared to UVERworld's new single, it takes the cake for rock/pop band release XD

ZEEBRA feat Miliyah Kato - My People
INFO: known as the father of Japanese Hip-hop for he was the one who first introduced rapping to Japan. he was part of the rap group King Giddra until making his solo debut in 1997. later in 1998 he released his first album called "The Rhyme Animal". with his influence and popularity as a rapper, ZEEBRA has established an urban and hip-hop scene in Japan.
THOUGHTS: mm love the nice chilled or laidback feel of the beat. its enough for me to listen to the song on repeat, and Miliyah is just an added bonus (think its time for her to release a "feat Miliyah" album). ^_^

Anna Tsuchiya - BUBBLE TRIP
INFO: a half Japanese and half Russian American who got her career started by doing some modeling in her mid-teens. it wasn’t until 2002 when she began a singing career in the duo Spin Aqua. later on, she quit the duo and went solo after being married and having a child. she released “Taste My Beat”, a solo mini album in 2005.
THOUGHTS: dang this song gets stuck in my head. XD very catchy and a great mix of punk/rock/pop that Anna is known for. ^_^

mink - Together again
INFO: a Korean singer who sings in Japanese and English. she signed with avex after sending a demo tape full of cover songs. on August 3rd, 2005 she debuted with a self titled album and later on that year also released another album, "e + motion". her name stands for "made in Korea".
THOUGHTS: aah, there we go. glad she's back to her 'powerful ballad' form XD personally didn't like her 3rd album much, but the road to the 4th is looking good ^_^

UVERworld - Shaka Beach ~Laka Laka La~
INFO: a five member pop and rock band with lead singer TAKUYA∞. they formed in 2003 but didn't officially debut until July 2005 with the single "D-tecnoLife", a theme for the popular anime "Bleach". later, they released their debut album "Timeless". UVER (or uber) means "over" in German.
THOUGHTS: their new single is a bit iffy since I'm always weary of artists saying 'lala' or something over and over again (its like they couldn't think up of lyrics), but its passable in my book.

Ayumi Hamasaki - fated
INFO: one, if not the most, recognized name in the Jpop industry. one of the top selling artists in Japan, she started out doing some modeling at a young age and trying out acting before becoming bored with both. by chance she met with Avex's head who encouraged her to try singing and writing her own songs. she debuted in 1998 and since then her success has boomed. she does mostly pop music, but sometimes fuses that with rock or R&B.
THOUGHTS: dang, its been awhile according to Ayu standards XD anywho, didn't like the other a-side, "glitter" that much, but "fated" pulled at me more. some dramatic pop with dramatic lyrics. the song's title is the password this week.

ayaka - Jewelry day
INFO: a young singer and song writer from Osaka with a strong voice. she first started out inspired by gospel music and performing live with friends during her freshman year in high school. wanting to continue with music, she attended a private music school. she made her major debut with the single "I believe" in early 2006.
THOUGHTS: her latest single is alright. its slow and has a nice touch of acoustic guitars, but its not powerful like "mikazuki" or "I believe". :/

Otsuka Ai - HEART　
INFO: an artist from Osaka and is gaining more and more popularity. her first two singles propelled her into the Jpop scene in 2003, earning her the "Best New Artist" award in the Japan Record Awards. she writes a lot of her music and plays the piano for her songs. so far she has released three albums and a best album.
THOUGHTS: given my dislike for her over hyper songs, had to go with the other song on her new single. ^_^; its a nice midtempo song, sounds really lighthearted.

AI - BRAND NEW DAY
INFO: half Japanese and half Italian, AI speaks English pretty well since she was born in California and moved between Japan and the USA. she's a J-urban artist, mostly singing and sometimes rapping. she was a part of the SUITE CHIC project, rapping in the song "Uh, Uh...".
THOUGHTS: ooo, AI is going back to upbeat R&B from when I first listened to her. ^_^ yay. sad that her other a-side is probably gonna draw in the sales though.

Angela Aki - Tashika ni たしかに
INFO: half Japanese Angela Aki was raised in Japan before moving to the United States in her teens. she's bilingual in both English and Japanese and released an indies album in 2000 in the USA. her music involves a lot of piano and her strong voice. for her third single, "Kiss Me Good-bye", she sang the theme song to the game, Final Fantasy XII.
THOUGHTS: hmm, I dunno about her doing rather happy songs. so the new single is alright, but I think I'll only really like her slower stuff.

Micro of Def Tech - Why not? with Kaori Natori
INFO: a MC whose real name is Yuki Nishimiya. part of the popular duo whose genre is "Jawaiian Reggae", Def Tech, Micro started up his own solo career in 2007.
THOUGHTS: I was so happy when I saw Kaori Natori on the b-side to his debut solo single. ^_^ yay she's still around! ahem, back to Micro, I can see a mediocre solo career out of him... seems like he's experimenting since he still has the Def Tech name attached.

Tokyo Jihen - OSCA
INFO: a band led by the famous singer Shiina Ringo. after ending her solo career, Shiina created a band with her as lead singer, guitarist Hirama, keyboardist HZM from PE'Z, drummer Hata, and the bassist Kameda. they released several singles and an album before two members left in 2005 and Izawa Ichiyou and Ukigumo joined.
THOUGHTS: so, didn't like the Shiina collabs that were popping up this year, and was glad to her something from TJ. ^^ its a little erratic and eclectic, though that's expected. haha

SATOMI' - Baby Doll -single ver-
INFO: a young R&B singer who started dancing and singing at a young age. she actually has released some singles in the UK as well as Japan. after three singles in Japan, she released her debut album, "Diamondlily" on February 7, 2007.
THOUGHTS: after enjoying her album, had to keep tabs on her ^_^ and her new single doesn't disappoint for R&B fans. might be a little too repetitive, but its all good.

INFO: a Jrock duo of Akihito Okano singing and Haruichi Shindo playing guitar. they've been around for a while now, from signing with Sony in 1997 and releasing their debut single “Apollo” in 1999. now they have five original albums in total as well as several DVD releases.
THOUGHTS: I'm surprised that I actually kinda like their new single. though, knowing me, I'll probably forget it in a week or so. ^^;

Emyli - Tekito LOVER feat VERBAL テキトーLOVER
INFO: a young R&B singer who is most known for the number of collaborations she did with m-flo. before working with them, she debuted with the single "Rain" in 2003 and released an album called "Flower of Life" later that year. in 2007 she started to release solo works again.
THOUGHTS: man, VERBAL is everywhere XD anywho, though her last single was pretty good, this one is...questionable. O_o guess it depends if this style of pop/R&B and her voice works for you.

INFO: a solo artist, she started out in 2001 with the single "Itoshigoyo". her music ranges from surreal sounding to rock accompanied with her airy voice. not much personal information is known about her, even her age and real name are mysteries. after four albums, she changed labels to Phoenix Records and released her first single, "Spinel", with them in November 2005.
THOUGHTS: :drooools: mmm...mini album by RURUTIA ^___^ love love the beautiful music as always. she never disappoints me~ give her a listen if you never heard of her before!

Koda Kumi - FREAKY
INFO: a solo Jpop/J-urban singer who originally tried out for Tsunku’s Morning Musume. after not making it she went solo and released her first single "Take Back" in 2000. however she didn't get very popular until she did a duet with BoA, a Kpop/Jpop singer, and sang the theme songs for Final Fantasy X-2. she also did a cover of the theme song for the movie Cutie Honey.
THOUGHTS: I think I'm getting my faith back in Ku. XD after that disaster year 2006 (yea yea, people will disagree with me but feh), she's getting a good start with 2007. ^^ this song is a great aggressive song by her, me likes.

Yuna Ito - Mahaloha feat Micro　
INFO: a half Japanese and Korean solo singer that made her major debut in both acting and singing in the movie "NANA", playing Serizawa Reira. that role landed her a chart topping hit as well as a few awards. she was born in Hawaii and moved to Japan after high school. in December 2006, she continued her role as Reira in the second NANA movie.
THOUGHTS: nice, chilling and relaxing new single by her thats got a Hawaiian vibe to it. oh yea, and Micro from the 'Jawaiian' duo Def Tech helps her out in this track. ^^

melody. - READY TO GO!
INFO: Hawaiian born melody. is fluent in both Japanese and English. she left her modeling career in the States, moving to Japan to pursue her singing career and has been pretty successful. her debut single was "Dreamin' Away", which was released in early 2003. she also did a few collabs with the duo m-flo. she is also the VJ for the show J-MELO.
THOUGHTS: oo new album by her. ^_^ the title track is some an upbeat pop track with a little bit of dance thrown in.

Monkey Majik - Sora wa Maru de 空はまるで
INFO: a group that consists of Canadian brothers Maynard and Blaise Plant, Takuya Kikuchi, and DICK. the brothers sing and play guitar while the other two are the drummer and bassist. they first released in 2002, but until 2006 gained immense popularity with the singles "fly" and "Around the World".
THOUGHTS: great new album by them. the opening and title track are particularly good and stands up to the strong single tracks.

SE7EN - Ari no Mama ありのまま
INFO: a very popular Korean singer (Korean name, Choi Dong Wook) who is now releasing singles in Japan. he first released "Hikari" with the help of Dai of Do As Infinity in 2005. in early 2006 he released his first Japanese album.
THOUGHTS: oh SE7EN, releasing some really energized pop. XD not so sure about it, sounds a bit too boy band-ish for me hahaha.

Foxxi misQ - Party Booty Shake feat Miss Monday
INFO: a new R&B group with three members: CHIE, YU-A, and DEM. although they each auditioned to be solo acts, they were grouped together to create a trio focusing on harmony. setting them apart from other groups/bands is that they don't have a lead singer and instead act as a 'unit'. they debuted with the single "Tha F.Q.'s Style" in July 2006.
THOUGHTS: yay debut album by them!! XD got my copy and love the old school feel of this song. its almost disco-ish, but so very catchy.

Zwei - 1+1=2
INFO: Zwei is a duo of Ayumu, who sings and Megu, who plays the bass. both started out in different bands but met and formed in 2003. their first single was released in May 2004, "Movie Star".
THOUGHTS: its been awhile since they released anything ^^; so the pop/rock duo comes back with an energetic track.

ERIKA - FREE
INFO: a model, actress, and now singer, Erika Sawwajiri first released a single under the name, Kaoru Amane, who is a character in the drama/movie "Taiyou no Uta". in the drama version, Erika played Kaoru Amane and released a very successful single. for her next single, she now simply goes under the name "ERIKA".
THOUGHTS: so yea, did NOT recognize her in that new video XD too used to that Kaoru image of hers hahaha. song wise, its pretty decent. sounds a lot like the artist, Miz, with the pop/rock sound.

AZU - Cherish
INFO: a new artist who first popped up in the music scene by collaborating with the rapper, SEAMO, on his album "Live Goes On" with the song, "Kokoro no Koe". she released her debut single, "Cherish", in late May.
THOUGHTS: really liked the collab that she did with SEAMO, and so had to give her debut song a listen. its some enjoyable light pop that's worth a try. ^_^ this artist is the password this week.

Ketsumeishi - Mata Kimi ni Aeru また君に会える
INFO: a rap group that formed back in 1993. now with members Ookura and Ryo as the MCs/rappers, Ryoji with vocals, and DJ Kohno as the DJ, they debuted in 1999 with the single "Kocchi Oide". their name is a mixture of a Chinese herb and Japanese slang.
THOUGHTS: hmm a summer song by a rap group that isn't totally grating and annoying. XD its not some loud and overly energetic song that irritates me ::cough::orangerange::cough:: ^_^ so yay.

DOUBLE - SUMMERTIME feat VERBAL
INFO: DOUBLE used to be a R&B duo of sisters Sachiko and Takako. they released one album together until Sachiko suddenly passed away from a brain hemorrhage. after mourning for a about a year, Takako started to release music again, still using the name DOUBLE.
THOUGHTS: ok, so DOUBLE is back to the party-ish music, which now is ok (hey VERBAL is featured!), but omg that video... she really really needs to eat more O_o
